In our daily life, every one of us feels pain, suffering, depression, and etc in different ways. But the question is what do these feelings indicate to us? What do they show? In our life if we feel such things, we can follow the following steps.
- What is REASON or CAUSE behind my suffering and pain?
- What is CURE or SOLUTION?
- If I can not find answers for the above questions, what are LESSONS or PURPOSE in my suffering?
- Being patient
For example, let us say one day I feel great depression and pain. So what shall I do to solve this problem? I apply the above steps. What’s reason behind my depressions and suffering? It may be sins I have done, or It may be good deeds I have missed (for instance, not performing Islamic prayer properly) and etc. What’s Cure? My cure is Turning to my Lord and ask for forgiveness. So turning to my Lord and asking for forgiveness cures my pain and suffering. If my suffering is not cured at this moment, I search for lesson in it. My suffering maybe to be humble in front of Allah, it maybe not to be arrogant and etc. At the end I will be patient.
The first and third questions are found in the following verse of the Qur’an:
“Evil (corruption, sins and disobedience of Allah, etc.) has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds, etc.), that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah, and begging His Pardon).” (Suuratu Ar-Ruum 30:41)
Suffering: Evil (corruption, sins and disobedience of Allah, etc.) has appeared on land and sea… that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have done, (They will thus suffer the consequences of the evil they do and the corruption they spread.)
Reason: what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds, etc.),
Purpose : they may return (by repenting to Allah, and begging His Pardon).
Cure or Solution: Returning to Allah
In the Qur’an Allah says:
“Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book whose verses are perfected and then presented in detail from [one (Allah) Who is] Wise and Acquainted.
[Through a messenger, saying], “Do not worship except Allah . Indeed, I am to you from Him a warner and a bringer of good tidings,”
And [saying], “Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.
To Allah is your return, and He is over all things competent.” Suuratu Huud 11:1-4
