Indeed bad addiction destroys life. When you are addicted to movie, music, internet and any other addiction, it is difficult to understand why you feel frustrated, bored, pessimistic, hopelessness and etc. Your life becomes dark. You search every possible way to get out of this darkness to light. All of them may defy you. To get out of this darkness what shall you do? Do you work hard to get money so that you can get out of this darkness? Yes, of course, you should work to earn money. But money can’t remove darkness of life. What makes our life dark is not money itself, but it is sin we commit every day. Committing sins is not greatest mistakes itself but persisting in sins is greatest mistakes. Every one of us commits sins. But the best of us are those who repent to Allah frequently and do good deeds. Have you ever searched answer for the question,“How can I get rid of internet or movie addiction?”
Many people are afflicted by this disease. As a result, their Imaan (faith) has become weak. Fear, doubt, instability, hopelessness and worry engulfed them. Indeed Imaan gives peace of mind, security and tranquillity. When it becomes weak, peace of mind, security and tranquillity too become weak. So how can we get rid of movie addiction?
1.First Best medicine is Qur’an– “When I was in grade 8 and 9, I was so addicted to movies and films. After school, my first task was to stick my eyes with fox and MBC channels. In Ethiopia, the so called ‘Gamana’ drama was my another addiction. I remember one day that when this drama started, I didn’t perform the prayer (Asr salah) properly. My heart was stuck in drama rather than to salah (prayer). So what could I do to get rid of such addictions? When I watched and listened to Islamic Audio and video, I returned to watching movies and drama as before. So what shall I do?
Alhamdulillah for all of these diseases I have the greatest and fastest medicine. That is reading with understanding and implementing Book of Allah, Al-Qur’an. When I began grade ten, I began it with reading the meaning of the Glorious Qur’an. I was reading only English translation. I read it three months. The translation I was reading was ‘Sahih International’ It is an easy and accurate translation. After three months, I gave up watching movies, film or drama.”
But the question is how can we read the Qur’an? If you know Arabic or memorised the whole Qur’an, you may think as if you know the whole Qur’an. This is delusion. No matter how much we know Qur’an, always it opens for us new knowledge. We can approach the Qur’an in this way;
a.Whether we know Arabic or not, we should try our best to study Tafseer. Let alone tafseer, when you try to study its translation, sheytan makes for you as difficult as mountain. By seeing its page, you say ‘When I finish this?’ To defeat this, just give one or half hour every day for studying the Qur’an. At first it may be difficult for you. You taste bitter. But don’t lose hope and patience, soon bitter changes to sweet, hardness changes to easiness, “For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.” Al-Qur’an 94:5
Another whisper of sheytan is that he says to you ‘You have no time to study the Qur’an because your school lessons are many.” But when you watch movie, he says nothing. To defeat this, remember this Ayah “Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” Al-Qur’an 2:268
When you study Qur’an for one hour every day, you get forgiveness and bounty from Allah. You live life of happiness and easy.
b.Choose the time to study Qur’an– after Fajr and Asr salah are the best times.
c.When you study the Qur’an, sheytan may cast into your heart doubt, confusion and proud. But be patient. Those confusion and darkness is the way you become strong. Seek guidance from Allah.
d. Choose good Tafseer– Best Tafseer is Tafseer ibn Kathir. Now it is available in English.
2.Second best medicine is salah– the more you perform salah properly, the further you are from bad addictions. “Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.” Al-Ankabuut 29:45
To perform salah properly, you need great strive and exercise. First, try your best to pray on time. Then to pray with Jama’a. Then try your best to understand what you are saying in Salah. Especially, ponder over the meaning of Fatiha. Then try you best to gather your attention over salah.
After you finish salah, there is something that makes your salah sweet and removes your darkness. What is that? It is du’aa. Among du’aa which one removes your darkness? It is istighfaar (seeking forgiveness from Allah). When you study the Qur’an, you will find that Prophets calling their people to istighfaar so that they receive mercy from Allah. When you seek forgiveness from Allah, some darkness and confusion are removed from you. Actually, sins are darkness and burden. To remove this darkness and drop this burden, seeking forgiveness from Allah and doing good deeds are the best solutions. So after every salah, don’t forget seeking forgiveness and guidance from Allah earnestly and eagerly. These are my favourite du’aas;
رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ
“Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous.” Ali-Imraan 3:193
“O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful). (Sahih Al-Bukhaari)
Al-Hasan al-Basri was once asked, “Shouldn’t we be shy in front of Allah to ask Him to forgive a sin and then we do it again, then we again ask Him to forgive the sin and we do it again?” Al-Hasan answered, “Satan wishes that he could gain that victory over you. Do not get bored with asking forgiveness.”
Indeed Allah gave great emphasis for these two best medicines when He says:“But those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.” Al-Qur’an 7:170
Of course, there is time for enthusiasm and there is a time for inactivity. Sometimes you become active, sometimes you lose motivation. You are frustrated. But at this time, try your best to control your emotion. Read good books and articles. Don’t retreat to movie and films. Instead of retreating, do sports, watch Islamic lecture.
3.Third medicine– making every sin in your sight enormous and great. The greater the sin is in your sight, the more you flee from it. When looking at street girl become great sin in your sight, you flee from watching movie. As scholar said persisting in minor sins leads to major sins. When you look at haraam (forbidden) thing, you reproach yourself and repent to Allah frequently. Indeed Allah swears by the self-reproaching soul.
“And I swear by the self-reproaching person (a believer).” Suratu al-Qiyama 75:2
When you reproach for the sins you have done, you go upward. You say to yourself, “I don’t return to this. I should stop this. Why did I do this? Why do I say this?…” In this way, you struggle to correct yourself until you become upright.
4.Fourth medicine is to make your heart and tongue wet by zikr (remembrance of Allah)– everywhere you go when you train your tongue by zikr, you get peace of mind and tranquillity. When you are tempted by sheytan (satan), you increase zikr then temptation of sheytan goes away. For example, you can say;
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَىَّ الْقَيُّومَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
“I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, whom there is none worthy of worship but Him, the Living, Al-Qayyum, and I repent to him,” (https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi/48/208)
5.Fifth medicine is patience– above all these things can never be accomplished unless you have patience. When you yearn for success, difficulty becomes easy, hardness melts away, striving and patience become your motto, tawakkul (relying upon Allah) becomes your backbone. Without these, you can’t go forward. So be patient. Ask Allah for help and guidance.
Remember death and the Day of Resurrection. Look in the Qur’an worst destination of those who disobey Allah and good destination of those who obey Him. Even, look in this world how worse and depressive lives of those who disobey Allah. Look at this nature of this world. For how many years you live in this world? It is only brief moments. Is it befitting for us to waste this brief moment by sins?
I conclude by this sweet hadith of Prophet (SAW):
“Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak one, and both are good. Adhere to that which is beneficial for you. Keep asking Allah for help and do not refrain from it. If you are afflicted in any way, do not say: ‘If I had taken this or that step, it would have resulted into such and such,’ but say only: ‘Allah so determined and did as He willed.’ The word ‘if’ opens the gates of satanic thoughts“. (Riyadu as-Saalihin)
