Last week we saw the meaning of doubt and its causes. To review doubt causes confusion and depression. Indeed, the first way Satan leads people into the darkness of kufr (disbelief) is to cast doubt upon their heart. Once the person has disbelieved in Allah and The Day of Resurrection, he leads life without a definite goal. No matter how much he owns wealth in this world, his destination is hellfire, may Allah protect us. The best cure for disease of doubt is to seek correct knowledge and with sincere intention. The more his knowledge increases, the less temptation of satan is and vice-versa.
Now let’s examine some cure for this disease.
1.Learning and pondering over the Qur’an–
The Qur’an is the best cure for the diseases of kufr (disbelief), doubt, ignorance, envy, hatred and all hearts’ diseases. When you approach it with an open mind and sincere intention, you will be cured from what disturbs your life.
“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.” (Suuratu Al-Isra 17:82)
“In the Qur’ān we have a cure from carnal desires, greed, envy and evil thoughts. All these cause sickness of the heart and mind, leading to debility and utter ruin. The Qur’ān also provides a cure from deviant thoughts and feelings. It protects the mind from going far astray, while allowing it complete freedom within its fruitful pursuits. It stops the mind from wasting its energy over what is devoid of use. It lays down for it a sound approach that ensures good and useful results.”
So when you turn to the Qur’an, you get great deal of fruits. By providing irrefutable evidences and proofs, Qur’an guides humanity to the most correct creed. Who can deny this truth?
“And have you seen the water that you drink? Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?” Suuratu Al-Waaqi’a 56:68-70)
If all nations of the world are gathered together to bring water from the sky, can they do? Can they gather cloud together? Can cloud be gathered by itself? Can rain come down from the sky by itself without any elaborate planning? Think for a moment, how all these be possible without Allah (God)?
Now let’s turn our attention to the Day of Resurrection. Allah says in the following meaning of the Qur’an:
“Does man think that he will be left neglected? Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted? Then he was a clinging clot, and [ Allah ] created [his form] and proportioned [him]. And made of him two mates, the male and the female. Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?” (suuratu Al-Qiyaama 75:36-40)
Scholar said about suda (neglected), “Will he not be commanded and prohibited? Will he not be rewarded and punished?” Yes does man think that he will disappear without being asked about his actions? You don’t see how people are being oppressed without right? Don’t you see oppressors die without being punished? So do you think that all these oppression in the human history will be left in vain? The Day of Judgement or The Day of Resurrection will come to restore this justice. Never ever is the complete justice fulfilled in this world.
“What is man? How does he come into existence? What are his origins? How does he grow into his present status? What journey did he make before arriving on this planet? Was he not a mere drop of a certain emitted fluid? Did not this one-celled drop transform into a cell mass that clung to the wall of the uterus to survive and be nourished? Who guided it to do this, and who gave it this ability?
Then again, who made out of it an embryo with perfectly shaped organs, composed of millions and millions of cells, when it only originated as a single cell that fertilized an egg? Who guided his long eventful journey while he was a helpless creature without an intellect, perception and experience?
Ultimately, who brought out of the single cell the two types, male and female? What will did this cell have to develop into a male while the other developed into a female? Or, who indeed can claim to have intervened to guide their different routes to make this choice in the dark depths of the uterus?
There is no escape! Everyone admits the presence of the gentle hand that guided the emitted drop of fluid along its long way and brought it to its final shape, according to an elaborate plan: ‘And made of him two mates, the male and the female.” (Verse 39)
“Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?” (verse 40)
Yes, indeed! Allah Almighty is able to bring the dead to life. Yes, indeed! Limitless is He in His glory, Allah is able to bring about the second life. Yes, without doubt. Man can say nothing to this, other than submit to its truth.” Allah says in the following meaning of the Qur’an:
“Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?“ (Suuratu Al-Mu’uminuna 23:115
Second Cure: contemplating over the Universe
“It is He (Allah) who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know” (Suuratu Yuunus 10:5)
“These are two very clear scenes which we take for granted because of our long familiarity with them and their continuous repetition. Who could imagine the awesome feelings of majesty and magnificence of a person who sees the sun rising and setting for the first time, or the full moon making its first appearance followed by its first setting? The Qur’ān reminds us of these two very familiar scenes so as to bring them back to us anew. It awakens in our hearts a desire to look and reflect over such great phenomena.
The Qur’ān draws our attention to the elaborate design clearly seen in their creation: “It is He who made the sun a shining light.” (Verse 5) We feel that it is almost ablaze. “the moon a derived light.” It shines and illuminates. “And determined for it phases.” (Verse 5) It stands every night in a new position which gives it a corresponding shape. This is seen by all of us when we look at the moon, night after night. We do not need to have any specialized knowledge of astronomy to realize this. The purpose is clear: that you may know the number of years and account [of time].’ (Verse 5) Today, we all still calculate time on the basis of the sun and the moon’s movements.
Is all this a pastime, a coincidence or something false? Certainly not. Such an elaborate system, providing such perfect harmony and accuracy which never fail, could not be without purpose. It is neither false nor a coincidence: “Allah has not created this except in truth.” (Verse 5) The truth is its tool, substance and objective. The truth is constant and firmly rooted, and these phenomena which point to the truth are also clear, constant and permanent. “He details the signs for a people who know “(Verse 5) Knowledge and learning are needed to understand the elaborate planning behind these magnificent scenes.” (In the Shade of The Qur’an vol.9, p-36)
Third cure: Seeking refuge in Allah from satan
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Satan comes to one of you and says, ‘Who created so-and-so? ’till he says, ‘Who has created your Lord?’ So, when he inspires such a question, one should seek refuge with Allah and give up such thoughts.” (Sahih Al-Bukhaari and Muslim)
On this hadith, ibn al-Jawzi gave some interesting words in his book called “Talbis iblis”. A little bit it is difficult to translate here. So you can refer it from page 530. The link is provided below. Also look the same book on page 72
It is satan who casts doubt about irrefutable truth. So it’s needed to seek refuge in Allah from him.
When you are tested by sheytan, also read three last sura of the Qur’an especially surat An-Naas. Also remember this verses:
“And Iblees (Satan) had already confirmed through them his assumption, so they followed him, except for a party of believers. And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian.” (Suuratu Saba 34:20-21)
You should always make yourself ready for test. Among the greatest tests is test of heart. If you are a believer, sometimes satan shakes your imaan (faith). You are tested severely. If you pass this test, you go upward. You will get peace of mind, your imaan and conviction increase.
Important note: Never liken Allah with creatures. “There is nothing like unto Him”(Suurat Ash-Shuraa 42:11). To remove disease of likeness from your mind, think over Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) and Subhaanallah (Exalted is Allah). When you say Allahu Akbar, you are saying ‘Nothing equals to Allah, it is impossible to comprehend (grasp) zaat (nature) of Allah in the human mind because He is the Greatest and human Vision perceives Him not. How can we comprehend zaat (nature) of Allah in our weak mind while we can’t comprehend the whole universe?”
Then when satan casts into your mind something, say A’uzubillah mina sheytan rajim (I seek refuge in Allah from accursed satan) and say Subhaanallah (Exalted be Allah above all these). Study and believe in attributes (sifaat) and names of Allah. Never deny any sifaat and names of Allah. In this way, you can remove evil thoughts.
Always you should ask Allah for help and guidance. You can’t move on this long journey unless Allah helps you. Say:
يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ
‘O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.”
Running away from sins and always asking forgiveness from Allah.
Performing Salah properly, doing good deeds.
Staying away from unnecessary questions and arguments.
When you are tested, have patience, don’t be frustrated and give up salah. When people are tested by this, they give up salah.
Remember that there is no way that leads you to ultimate success and happiness other than Islam. Indeed, when doubt remains in the heart for a long time, it leads to kufr (disbelief) ad nifaaq (hypocrisy). When the person disbelieves, he lives life of depression and misery in this world and Hereafter. Always he/she should try his/her best to purify his/her soul.
“Unquestionably, [for] the allies (Awliya) of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), and used to fear Allah much (by abstaining from evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds).” Suuratu Yuunus 10:62-63
Have you seen fruits of imaan (faith) and taqwaa? Fear and grieve are removed from you. May Allah make us among His awliya. But if a person disbelieves in Allah, fear and grieve encompasse him.
