Today we are in the great fitna (tribulation, trial, temptation and etc). In this fitna youth and women are first to be attacked and as a result, they are lost in the darkness of life. Today many youths are lost, they don’t know why they live in this world, what is the purpose of their creation. They roam in the life like a mother who lost her child. She doesn’t sleep well until she joins her child. Why they lost themselves? What is the reason behind their roaming? Why can they not find the straight path that is full of light?
Life has become boring and meaningless for them. There is internal combustion which is hard to cool down. Darkness of life has encompassed them. From where have they come? Where are they living? To where are they heading? Second set of questions that need satisfying answer. Let’s begin our journey by “Why today’s youth lost themselves?” The followings are the main reasons for their confusion, depression and losing themselves in the darkness of life.
1.They forget or don’t know why they live– this is main and root reason for losing themselves. Many people when asked why they live in this world, their answers would be to get job, to marry, to have children and then die. If man limits his ambition to behavior of animals, indeed he loses himself more than animals do. There should be a definite purpose for the human being who is honourable creature.
Special Note before reading Verses of the Qur’an:“Literally, ‘Our.’ The ‘royal We’ is barely used in English, but it is a common feature of Arabic speech, used to indicate the importance of the speaker. It is my standard practice to translate this ‘We’ as ‘I,’ since the literal translation is a frequent cause of confusion for English speakers” Taken from Usool at-Tafseer by Bilal Philips-page 7 footnote. So do I use ‘I’ instead of ‘We’ to avoid confusion.
Allah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) says:
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” Suurat Az-Zaariyat 51:56
“This short statement embodies one of the greatest universal truths. Indeed, to fully understand this truth it is necessary for human life on earth to be set on the right track. This applies in equal measure to the life of the individual, the community and all humanity throughout history. Understanding this truth opens up a whole host of concepts and meanings. The first point in this truth is that there is a clear objective for the existence of humans and jinn on earth. This objective is represented in a task: whoever fulfils it achieves the objective of his existence, and whoever neglects it leads a life without purpose or objective. He who neglects it thus breaks away from the law that applied to him when he came into existence, and he ends in utter loss. This task which binds humans and jinn to be law of the universe is worship or servitude to Allah (God). Thus, there will be a servant who worships and a Lord who is worshipped. Man’s life is thus set aright on this basis.” Taken from “In The Shade of The Qur’an- volume 16-page 167
This is definite purpose of Jinn and Human being. When they deviate from this purpose they lose themselves.
Allah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) says:
“And that you worship [only] Me? This is a straight path.” Suurat Yaasin 36:61
When a human being doesn’t worship Allah alone, unlimited number of gods engulfs him and as a result, he is lost. His vain desires, Satan, fellow human being and etc make him slave and servant. There is no escape from this unless they return to Allah. So ‘Worshipping Allah alone’ is the straight and bright path. Other paths are darkness.
2.They turned away from light– we know how it is dark a house which has no light. The same applies to a person who has no light. Which light?
This is light. Allah says:
“O mankind! Verily, there has come to you a convincing proof (Prophet Muhammad SAW) from your Lord, and I sent down to you a manifest light (this Quran).” Suurat An-Nisa 4:174
“O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Now has come to you My Messenger (Muhammad SAW) explaining to you much of that which you used to hide from the Scripture and passing over (i.e. leaving out without explaining) much. Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a light and a plain Book (this Qur’an).
Wherewith Allah guides all those who seek His Good Pleasure to ways of peace, and He brings them out of darkness by His Will unto light and guides them to a Straight Way (Islamic Monotheism).” Suurat Al-Maa’ida 5:15-16
Allah guides anyone who seeks His Good Pleasure by Qur’an to ways of peace, light and straight path. When anyone turns away from this light (Qur’an), for him is darkness upon darkness. Life becomes depressive and worry.
“But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Quran nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and I shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.” Suurat Taha 20:124
So this is the second reason for depression and life’s hardship. When the person turns to the Qur’an, everything becomes light in front of him.
Some youth say, “What shall I do? I don’t know what to do. Life is boring.” In this way they lose happiness because they have turned away from light and guidance (i.e Qur’an). When light is missed, is there anything other than darkness and unhappiness.
“Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and I gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men, like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out? Thus it is made fair-seeming to the disbelievers that which they used to do. “ Suurat An-An’am 6:122
When light and guidance are lost evils seem fair and good. But turning to light and guidance removes confusion and darkness. So let’s turn to light so that we lead happy life.
When we turn to the second set of questions, we should be sure of our way. If we don’t know where to go, we will be lost. Many philosophers have been confused when they don’t know the direction of their journey. Qur’an gives short answers where man comes from and to where he is going.
“So let man see from what he is created!
He was created from a fluid, ejected,
Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
Verily, (Allah) is Able to bring him back (to life)!
The Day when secrets will be put on trial,” Suurat At-Tariq 86:5-9
So man is created from sperm drop and he is not left without reckoning for his/her deeds. Rather he/she will return on the Day of resurrection and be recompensed for his/her deeds. When the concept of Resurrection is engraved in man’s conscience, his life sets on the right track. But if he denies the Day of Resurrection, his life becomes meaningless and he does whatever he wishes. In this way, he lives life of confusion and depression.
We have stated why youth and as a whole human are lost. In life knowing own purpose is root of success and happiness. In our life, we should ask ourselves WH questions.
- Where did I come from?
- Why do I live here?
- Where am I heading to?
After answering these question, we should again ask ourselves these questions.
- From where do I begin my journey?
- How do I travel my journey?
- Where is my last destination?
These are key questions for success and happiness. Let us review their answers. ‘Where do I come from?’ As we have seen in the above Qur’anic texts, we are created from sperm drop and then in stage Allah proportioned us in best form. “Is not He (Allah Who does that), Able to give life to the dead? (Yes! He is Able to do all things).” (Al-Qur’an 75:40) So Allah Who created us in the first place can return for the second time. There is no doubt and confusion. When we answer this question well, we are answering the second and third question. In short, answers of second and third questions are ‘We have come to the world to worship Allah and we will be resurrected in order to be recompensed for our deeds.’
After we understand this set of questions well, we proceed to the second set of question.
“From where should I begin my journey?” We should begin our journey from purifying our soul. Because purifying the soul from polytheism, hypocrisy, deceit, pride, arrogance, envy, hatred, evils and etc opens the way for success and happiness. striving to purify soul is a turning point of excellence and success.
“He has succeeded who purifies it (soul).
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]” Al-Qur’an, Suurat Ash-Shams 91:9-10
When we come to the second question, we should have the right drug that helps us to purify our soul. To purify the soul, correct method should be applied. Otherwise, bad medicine kills the patient.
Through studying and implementing Qur’an and Sunnah soul (heart) is purified from every evil thing. This method is the best method and has no parallel in the purification of the soul. So to travel on your journey, use Qur’an and Prophetic Sunnah as your manual and map. Insha Allah, you will succeed.
When we come to the third question, we should choose Aakhira (Hereafter) as our last destination. When we choose Hereafter and strive for it, our life sets on the right footing.
“Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter – I increase for him in his harvest. And whoever desires the harvest of this world – I give him thereof, but there is not for him in the Hereafter any share.” Suurat Ash-Shuura 42:20
“And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter – that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.” Suurat al-Ankabuut 29:64
After darkness and confusion, there is light and guidance for anyone who strives and seeks right guidance. Whoever strive to be guided to the way of Allah, He promised unfailing promise to guide them.
“And those who strive for Me – I will surely guide them to My ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.” Al-Qur’an Surat Al-Ankabut 29:69
So whoever strives, he strives for his benefit. Whoever lags behind and turn away from guidance, he only harms himself. So don’t lose hope, strive. Insha Allah you will find light, guidance and happiness. Be patient throughout your struggle. After hardship and patience, there are relief and happiness.
