Habit Formation

“In the American Journal of Psychology (1903) habit is defined in this way: ‘A habit, from the standpoint of psychology, is a more or less fixed way of thinking, willing, or feeling acquired through previous repetition of a mental experience.'”*
We may divide habit in to two: good and bad habits. Good habits are habits which have acceptance insight of society and beneficial for one self and society. For example developing habit of reading and writing is beneficial both for own self and society as long as what he/she write or read is not cause life disorder.

As for bad habits they are unacceptable near society and may be a cause health problems. Habits may differ from society to society. One habit may be acceptable by one society but near others it may be disgusting.
Our point is about good habits that we should develop and incorporate to our life. As it said habit is hard to start and hard to break. The first step we should do to interface with new habit is that starting from easier and repeat every day as much as we can. Suppose I want to be author. To be an author I wouldn’t be expected to choose topic of book and start writing just now. First what I should do is that I start writing just one sentence today. My first published book should be making writing one or more sentences my habit. Then with permission of Allah I will publish more hundred books. As Turkish proverb says ” many a mickle makes a muckle.” -Many drops of water make a lake one day. But my publishing first book is more difficult than hundred books I mean habituating with first sentence is more difficult than writing thousand sentences later on.
Every day take five minutes to write one or more sentences and make it habit. When you write 20 sentences congratulate yourself. But be careful let it not dismantle you from writing more and more sentences in coming days. Motivation also plays crucial role here. If you don’t get motivation from friends, you are likely to give up your new habit. But be careful your friend out of jealousy may not motivate you. During this time you should motivate by yourself. Your goal is your first motivator. Find great quotes which motivate you. While interfacing with new habit, remind your goal. Make your goal telephone or computer wallpaper at first stage of your habit. This may help you to remind habit.
As Muslims we are expected many good things to make our habits. For example, Remembrance of Allah(Zikr) in every minutes of our life. I know one guy who makes habit of saying “La Ilaha ilallah wahdahu la sharika lahu lahul mulku walahul hamdu wahuwa ala kulli shay qadir”
‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner,to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent.’
He says while he goes to school, mosque, on bus and etc.
He said after making this his habit, it comes to his mouth unconsciously. May Allah accept him and make us just like him.
Islam teaches us to exploit every minutes of our life. While cooking our food, washing clothes and other many activities which are not done by tongue and heart, we can habituate with Remembrance of Allah.
I close my writing by saying may Allah make us habituating with such precious activities that lift our ‘Mizan’/balance on the Day Of Judgement.
